ICDL Asia emphasized the importance of digital literacy at the Ho Chi Minh City Education International Conference

Themed “Digital Transformation of Education: From the Core to the Comprehensive”, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training organised an international education conference on 28 October 2022.

The conference was graced by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Education and Training and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Duong Anh Duc, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee. It gathered education leaders from all 22 districts of the Ho Chi Minh City who participated the event face-to-face and online

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has identified digital transformation as the key focus and solution in improving the quality of its education and training sectors.

ICDL Asia was invited to present at the conference among other distinguished speakers and educational partners.

Ms. Tina Wu, General Manager of ICDL Asia shared in her presentation how ICDL is a holistic solution to promote and support HCMC’s effective digital transformation efforts in education. Our programmes can train students with internationally recognised digital skills and support teachers in ICT training, strategies and implementation.

At the seminar, World Bank’s global group of education specialists also shared their survey findings on schools’ readiness to embed technology in education. The survey was conducted with 277 schools and 302 teachers in Ho Chi Minh City.

It is encouraging to learn from the survey that HCMC school leaders are generally supportive of digital transformation: 88% of principals have a digital plan to incorporate information technology into teaching and school management, and 70% of teachers performed digital activities during their lesson planning preparation.

However, the World Bank representatives also identified main weaknesses in implementation of technology in schools are mainly due to the lack of access to digital devices and low quality of internet connection. Students often tend to use personal devices outside of school for research or communication.

World Bank recommended that future policies and implementation strategies need to put teachers and students as its main focus. It is also critical to develop and implement appropriate standards that define teachers’ digital competence, and encouraging teachers to focus on using technology in class, rather than for only lesson planning.

As the leading international digital skills standard, ICDL Asia is confident to support Ho Chi Minh City schools in ascertaining and improving its students and teachers’ level of digital competence.

At the seminar, we have received positive feedback from Department of Education and Training (DOET) of Ho Chi Minh City and schools on our Digital Student programmes and initiatives. We will continue to work closely with Vietnam government and our partner schools to uplift the digital competencies of students and educators.
