Highlights of ICDL Asia Digital Literacy Day 2021


Themed “Building a Competitive Workforce for Industry 4.0”, the ICDL Asia Digital Literacy Day 2021 was held virtually this year on 9 September 2021.

In its 5th iteration this year, the ICDL Asia Digital Literacy Day promotes the importance of digital literacy and serves as an important platform for academic leaders and industry partners to come together to share best practices of digital skills learning in Asia. 

Over 200 attendees joined our event this year, including industry experts, civil servants, academic leaders and training providers from Australia, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. 

1) Opening Speech & Special Address

Minister of State, Ministry of Education Singapore, Ms. Gan Siow Huang graced our event as the guest-of-honour. MOS Gan was joined by Ambassador Patrick Bourne of the Embassy of Ireland Singapore, among all our distinguished guests. 

During her opening speech, MOS Gan is supportive of ICDL’s growing commitment in empowering students and adult learners through digital literacy during her opening speech.

“I am heartened that ICDL Asia has worked with government and industry partners and has also expanded its programme offerings to focus more on emerging technologies. Building a competitive workforce is a collective effort by many stakeholders, including students, educators, and industry partners in both the public and private sector. I am glad to witness ICDL Asia’s growing commitment to this cause through its programme outreach to empower students and adult learners,” said MOS Gan.  

2) ICDL Global Updates Session & ICDL Asia’s Pledge

During the ICDL Global Updates session, Mr. Damien O’Sullivan, CEO of ICDL Foundation shared the key achievements and challenges faced by each region in the last 12 months.

He further elaborated on the foundation’s upcoming development plans before leading ICDL Asia’ pledge to train and certify 100,000 candidates in Singapore by 2024 with Ms. Tina Wu, General Manager of ICDL Asia.

3) ICDL Asia Digital Challenge 2021 Winners Announced

We announced the winners of the ICDL Asia Digital Challenge during the awards presentation ceremony. We are pleased to invite Mr. Damien O’Sullivan of ICDL Asia, Mr. Alvin Tan of Siemens Digital Industries Software, and Mr. Harry Giang of Alibaba Cloud to present the awards to the winners.

Over 500 students from 9 territories took part in this annual competition across 3 competition tracks, namely Business, Design and Emerging Technologies track. After 3 months of rigorous competition, we are pleased to announce the winners of the ICDL Asia Digital Challenge 2021.

4) Best Practices Sharing Session

For this year’s Best Practices Sharing session, we invited 3 representatives from leading technological enterprises and academic institutions as our guest speakers, namely:

  • Dr. Woo Boon Seong, Director, Learning Academy of Temasek Polytechnic
  • Dr. Gerard Boey, Principal & Academic Dean of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur
  • Mr. Zhou Bing, Global Vice President of Dell Technologies

They shared insights on the ever-evolving digital landscape and implementation of ICDL programmes in their respective territories, before engaging with our attendees in a robust Q&A session.

5) ATC Awards 2021 Winners Announced

ICDL Asia works closely with regional, national, and local partners to develop a strong global network of ICDL Accredited Test Centres (ATCs). We held an award ceremony to recognise the best ICDL Accredited Test Centres in the region. Check out the winners of the ATC Awards 2021.
