Shaping Digital-Savvy Students: Hon Wah College Nurtures Digital Literacy Through ICDL

Hong Kong, October 31st, 2023 – In a commitment to fostering digital literacy among its students, Hon Wah College located at Siu Sai Wan, the east of Hong Kong Island continues to integrate ICDL programs into its second-year Junior Secondary education curriculum.

This initiative is designed to cater to the ICT learning needs of 13-14-year-old students. Each academic year sees approximately 120 students enrolling in the ICDL program, spread across three classes. Class 2A is conducted in English, while classes 2B and 2C, are delivered in Traditional Chinese and Cantonese respectively as their main teaching mediums.

ICDL is a cornerstone of the school’s ICT curriculum and is made compulsory for all classes. Spearheading this initiative is the Subject Panel Head Teacher, who carefully selects four ICDL modules: Computer Essentials, Online Essentials, Documents, and Presentations. The curriculum is delivered over two semesters, with certification for two modules at the end of the first semester and the completion certification of the remaining two by the end of the second semester.

Despite the challenge of undertaking four ICDL modules for 13 to 14-year-old students may be significant, the school has now witnessed a continuous and gradual improvement in overall pass rates across the years. One crucial factor contributing to this success is the provision of suitable teaching materials in the local language—Traditional Chinese for writing and Cantonese for communication.

As for the certification test, ICDL invigilators are held in high regard as the examiner role of a public examination and students are expected to adhere strictly to the examination rules stipulated by the HKSAR Education Bureau.

Hon Wah College’s commitment to nurturing digital literacy ensures its students excel in the realm of technology from an early age with digital essential skills that will undoubtedly benefit them in our increasingly digitalised world. The integration of ICDL programs into the school’s ICT curriculum has proven to be a success.

As we look ahead, ICDL Asia remains dedicated to promoting and implementing ICDL in more schools, collaborating closely with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Education Bureau to shape a digitally proficient future for Hong Kong students.
