ICDL Asia Digital Literacy Day 2019

The fourth ICDL Asia Digital Literacy Day was held at the University of Malaya on 12 September 2019.

The event was graced by YB Ms Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister of Education of Malaysia. YB Teo was also accompanied by other distinguished guests including:

– Ms Catherine Alyward – Chargé d’Affaires, Embassy of Ireland, Malaysia
– Mr. Damien O’Sullivan – Chief Executive, ICDL Foundation
– YBhg. Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Abdul Rahim Hj. Hashim – Vice-Chancellor, University of Malaya

Mr. Damien O’Sullivan welcomed the participants with an impactful presentation on the changing nature of work as well as the emerging digital skills and adoption process in different countries and industries. 

Guest-of-Honour YB  Teo then spoke about the event’s theme of ‘Building a Competitive Workforce for Industry 4.0” as an undeniably apt topic in this era of digitisation and digital transformation. In her keynote speech, she mentioned that Digital Literacy should be the fourth pillar of education as it has become a core skill for our workforce.

“It is thus crucial that we proactively prepare for and adapt to the digital economy, to ensure that we will be able to stay ahead of the curve, reap the benefits of technology, and seize new opportunities that are being created. Key to this is the need to build strong digital capabilities for our people and enterprises. This is again the reason why there are ongoing efforts to develop a digitally competent workforce, ranging from programmes for our students, to post-graduation transition and lifelong learning initiatives.”

International and local notable guest speakers were also invited to share their views for 2 separate panel discussions. The first session combines experts from the education sector to share on “How to prepare the current students for the future Digital Workplace?”, while the second session focus on ways organisations overcome the HR challenges in the Digital Economy.
